Prostate Awareness

The most common cancer in Black men is prostate cancer. In the UK, 1 in 4 Black men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime compared to 1 in 8 men overall. Black men are 1.7 times more likely to be diagnosed with and 2.1 times more likely to die from prostate cancer than white men.
You are most likely to get prostate cancer as a black man if:

  • You are aged 45 or over and your risk increases as you get older

  • YOUR FATHER OR BROTHER HAS HAD IT

  • YOUR MOTHER OR SISTER HAS HAD BREAST CANCER

Early intervention could prevent:

  • Loss of Libido

  • LOWERED SEX DRIVE/SEXUAL ACTIVITY

  • DEATH

Testing for prostate cancer has changed: it is now just a blood test, with results delivered in 5 days, not a physical exam. If you are a Black man aged 40 to 44, you are not entitled to a PSA test until you are 50, and even then, you may be told it’s not needed. However, some health professionals believe you should ask for a baseline PSA test to help determine your future risk of developing prostate cancer. We are here to help facilitate that by providing the means and support for you to have that done with Ujamaa UK Collective (www.ujamaaukcollective.org.uk) and Shout Your Blessings (www.youtube.com/@shoutyourblessings8744), who have subsidised the cost for the first 60 people to sign-up.
